Rockets Mourn The Passing of Robert Thornton Senior
NEWARK, NJ - It is with deep regret and sadness that the New Jersey Rockets Junior Hockey Club announces the death of a member of their family, Robert Thornton, Senior. Thornton was the father of Rockets Head Coach and General Manager Bob Thornton.
The elder Thornton was a longtime well-known NHL player agent from the late 1970’s through the early 1990’s and was a driving force in the building of hockey facilities on Long Island with rinks in Bethpage and Port Washington. Thornton also served as the General Manager of the Ice Works facility in Syosset, the practice home of the New York Islanders.
“My father meant so much to me and to the game of hockey on Long Island,” the younger Thornton reflected. “As a NHL agent, he was a mentor to me and was the reason I got into the game. I grew up in rinks and around NHL players and the things I learned from him over the years made me a better player, a better coach, and a better man. He was my best friend and I will miss him.”
“Anytime there’s a loss anywhere in the Rockets family, it affects all of us,” said Rockets executive Peggy Del Mauro. “Our condolences go out to the Thornton family at the time of this unexpected loss.”
